Have you got tired of the ‘ping pong’ discussions?
What’s the deal with active listening?
Coaching is all about listening to the coachee and supporting him through compassion and empathy. Learn a cool technique in the following video:
Active listening offers the unique feeling that your coach is there without judging your choices, ideas, and plans for your life. Most importantly, the coach joins the conversation not to mechanically or argumentatively reply but to listen to you and share his knowledge and point of view.
To thrive in active listening, our students in Global Academy of Coaching but also our coachees in Plano (find more about Plano here: https://www.jillandnikolas.com/toplano.html) learn to apply the “3 seconds rule”. Anyone could adopt this method, upgrading the quality of his communication with other people.
Once the other person has finished talking, you can reply only after three seconds. By this, you allow safe space for your speaker to comment on something more. Additionally, you impress the thought that you were present in the conversation, and you grasped each one of his words. This tactic reinforces the warmth and sincerity of the conversation, and your discussant will appreciate this and eventually trust you.
As you can see, active listening is one of the core competencies of life coaching. It can turn you into a great leader even in your everyday life by developing intimacy and honesty rather than always preparing for a verbal fight to have the last word.
Remember that even the smallest things need a systematic approach to become successful. Feel free to reflect on this by reading my Forbes article “Luck Has Nothing To Do With Success”!
